CommonHelp is the Commonwealth of Virginia's fast and easy way to apply online for many Virginia social services assistance programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, Energy Assistance and Child Care. Through a single online site, you can find out what assistance you might be eligible for and submit one application saving you time and effort.
The website is a quick and easy way for people who live in Fairfax County to find out if they might be able to get:
    ·         Help with buying food
    ·         Low or no-cost health care
    ·         Help with buying prescription drugs
    ·         Help with paying for child care
    ·         Home energy assistance
    ·         Temporary cash assistance for families with minor children
It will take just 15 minutes to fill in the information about the people in your home, the money you get from a job or other sources, your housing costs, medical bills, and child care expenses.
Information you provide will stay private and safe. When you are finished, you will receive an immediate response if you are able to get help through programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, i.e., food stamps), Medical Assistance/FAMIS, Child Care, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, i.e., cash assistance) and Energy Assistance.  https://commonhelp.virginia.gov/access/

“Loving as Christ loves, serving as Christ serves.”

At Good Shepherd, we value the need to serve and stand with the poor and vulnerable, to advocate for justice, and to learn and live the seven core themes of Catholic Social Teaching.

Social Ministry work has been a hallmark of the parish since its early years. Indeed, Good Shepherd has helped launch two independent nonprofit agencies that are pivotal in serving the Alexandria, Virginia community: Good Shepherd Housing, and Progreso Literacy and Citizenship Center. We are also a founding church member of VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement in Northern Virginia), an interfaith social justice advocacy initiative.

Social Ministry at Good Shepherd includes more than 40 ongoing programs based on faith in action - programs of charity, advocacy, and education for all ages plus ministries of healing, comfort, and support. Furthermore, the Social Justice Ministry oversees an ongoing Emergency Assistance program and the annual Shepherd’s Gate Grant program.

For more information or to learn how to get involved, contact our Director of Social Ministry.
