We continue our Easter mystagogy, by considering today the gift we receive in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Each year on April 27, I gratefully remember the anniversary of the day I received my First Holy Communion,

Did You Know ... We Have Votive Candles

    4/22/2016

    Picture
Votive Candles - located in the  Prayer Room - are a traditional way to offer prayers for loved ones (living or deceased) or for special intentions. Lighting candles is a reminder that our prayers reach heavenward, just as the light and smoke from a flame reach upward.  (The Prayer Room is open daily 8am - 9:30pm)

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:6-7

    Mystagogy, Part II: Confirmation

    4/18/2016

    by Father Tom Ferguson, Pastor
    Picture
We continue our Easter mystagogy, by considering today the gift of the Spirit we received in the sacrament of Confirmation. We first received the gift of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, but this gift is strengthened in a unique way in the sacrament of Confirmation.
In Confirmation, we are given the power to bear witness to our faith in word and deed.

Did You Know ... We Have a Prayer Room!

    4/15/2016

    Picture
When you need a quiet space for meditative prayer, visit our Prayer Room. The room is located off the Narthex, to the left as you face the entrance to the church (next to the poor box). The room has beautiful mosaics of the Stations of the Cross and Our Lady of Guadalupe, votive candles for special intentions, and a stained glass window of the Good Shepherd. It’s a beautiful space set aside for quiet prayer and reflection. (Open daily 8am - 9:30pm)

“Come away by yourselves ... and rest a while.” Mark 6:31

    Ideas for Celebrating Earth Day

We are called to Care for Creation!

Pope Francis reminds us “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience” (Laudato Si, 217).

There are some great Earth Day resources available online:
    • USCCB Official USCCB resources, including prayers, song suggestions, intercessions, etc.
    • Catholic Climate Covenant Lots of online links available through Catholic Climate Covenant, a USCCB partner.
    • Grace before Meals A downloadable book of various "grace before meals prayers."
    • For Parents and Teachers For catechists (still a good resource despite broken links--which are helpfully identified as broken).

And, of course, there's Pope Francis' encyclical: Laudato Si'

If you're looking for a practical way to do something to help Care for Creation, consider joining a parish group for the Saturday, April 16 Potomac Watershed Clean Up Day
    (9:00am – 12:00pm).  Details to follow.

If you have questions about any of these ideas, or have an idea of your own, send me an email at  Susan@gs-cc.org.
