    THE DOMESTIC CHURCH

    Good Shepherd Gathers - PRAY

    Picture
    Introduction
We are living in a strange and disconcerting time as the current coronavirus outbreak has left us without access to our parish church, including the celebration of Mass. Yet this temporary lack of access reminds us that "the church" is not the building where we congregate. Rather, we are the Church, and the first unit of church community is the family -- also known as the Domestic Church.

    What is the Domestic Church?
The term “Domestic Church” refers to the family, the smallest body of gathered believers in Christ.
    • The term "Domestic Church" dates back to the first century AD. The Latin word ecclesiola means “little church.”
    • It is in the family that we first learn who God is, and how to pray, worship, and follow Him.  Saint John Paul II said that the family is the church in miniature.
    • We learn in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Thus the home is the first school of Christian life and "a school for human enrichment."Here one learns endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous - even repeated - forgiveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offering of one's life. (CCC 1657)
    The Four Levels of Church
We can speak of four distinct levels of Church:
    1. The Universal Church -  The global church led by the Pope, who is also the bishop of Rome, and all bishops in union with him.
    2. The  Diocesan Church -  Led by a local bishop, who guides us on how best to implement our faith in our own time and culture.
    3. The Parish Church - led by a local pastor, it is here where we gather in community to celebrate Mass and where we receive most of our religious instruction and the sacraments.

    4. The Domestic Church - The family, which plays a key role in our sanctification because it is the primary place where we practice coming to intimately love other persons.
We invite you to watch the following video about the Domestic Church. After watching, gather your family members to have a conversation
about the reflection questions. If your family lives in separate homes, consider having a phone conversation or a virtual conversation.

    QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND CONVERSATION
Who is your faith role model and why?

    2. Who taught you how to pray?
    3. Why do you go to Mass?
    4. When has your faith played a pivotal role in your life?
    5. What difference does your relationship with Jesus Christ make in your daily life?
    6. Parents: What is your hope for how faith will impact your children's lives as they grow older?
7: Children/Teens: How do you see faith making a difference in your parents' lives?
