Canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra, O.F.M.
Canonization Mass - General Information
The Canonization Mass will be celebrated at 4:15 pm (tentative) on the East Portico of the Basilica, facing the University Mall at the Catholic University of America. The Mass will be primarily in the Spanish language, and it is expected to exceed 2½ hours in length, not including time before and after the Mass itself.
Allocation of Tickets
Due to the small venue and necessary security, seating and standing room at the Mass is very limited. Tickets will be required to attend the Mass. Some tickets will be for seats, others will be for standing areas. Seats are not reserved, so those with tickets for a seat may wish to arrive early to get a good spot. Some seats and some standing areas will have obstructed, or partially obstructed, views. However, large video screens will be available to help make the Mass visible to all those with tickets.
The Archdiocese of Washington has offered a total of 325 tickets to the Diocese of Arlington: 150 seated tickets and 175 standing room tickets. All tickets will be allocated to parishes in the Diocese based on the number of parishioners. Each parish and mission will receive two (2) seated tickets. Good Shepherd parish also received four (4) standing tickets for a total of 6 tickets. We will have a lottery to choose the recipients of those 6 tickets. Tickets will be distributed in pairs of two, one parishioner lottery winner will receive two seated tickets, the next two parishioner lottery winners will receive a pair of two standing tickets.
Transportation and Considerations
It is important to understand that attendees to the Mass must arrive at Catholic University early, and that they may be there for as long as six hours or more, not counting transportation time. This will be a strenuous day, particularly if weather conditions are not ideal. This may be of interest to parishioners who are elderly or infirm in deciding whether they wish to request tickets. Also, please note that each ticket recipient must attend the Mass – tickets may not be sold or transferred to others.
Transportation will be a challenge for those attending the Mass, as there will be no parking available at the Basilica. All roads in the immediate vicinity of the Basilica will be closed. Those attending the Mass will be encouraged to use Metro. The Brookland/CUA station on the Red Line is less than ½ mile from the location of the Mass.
Lottery
Complete the lottery form (available in the parish office) with your name, address and phone number. Submit completed form to the parish office by 5:00pm on Thursday, September 10. Limit one entry per parishioner family. Winners of the lottery will be chosen at random. Winners will be notified by close of business on Tuesday, September 15.
